Abstract

This management project aimed to look at the existing method of costing courses and develop a new model that could be used to determine the costs of these courses. The project is based on 4 courses at the Royal Navy Maritime Warfare School in Hampshire and should provide significant benefits to them over the coming years. The ethical issues involved with collecting and the use of data was discussed, as were the potential ways of collecting data. A mixture of structured interviews and data analysis were chosen for the data collection methods. The lack of a current method for determining the cost of running a course meant that a new one needed to be developed and the need for analysing traditional methods arose. These aided in the development of the model and characteristics adopted from the methods show in the final model. Looking at the results obtained, the courses with students of higher ranks cost a significant amount more per day than those with low ranks. This reason for this was highlighted in the cost distribution charts which showed that student salaries made up a large proportion of the costs involved with each course. The cost model can be used for a variety of courses and can be adapted to suit a programme with alternate specifications. This allows the model to not only be used as a tool for gaining a snapshot view of the courses costs, but also potentially as a cost management tool if the student salaries are removed.
