Abstract

From practical origins on the field of battle to cinematic glamour and high fashion cult status, the trench coat has always represented the most stylish combination of protective and symbolic functions. We consider the cultural meaning of the heroes and heroines whose stylish appropriation of this iconic garment established/secured its sophisticated appeal. This lecture accompanied the exhibition 'Trench Coat: from field to fashion', held at the Winchester Discovery Centre, 4 October - 21 December 2014. The exhibition explored the iconic trench coat and its connections with Hampshire.
